“Where are we going?” I asked as we drove down the highway and exited off into a sleepy little town by the water.

“You are not good at this surprise stuff.” He chuckled.

“I just figure if you tell me, then I won. Where are we now?”

“Davenport,” he said. “This is where dinner is.”

A text came up on his phone on the dash as he pulled up to a gate that blocked the access to a large mansion.

“Wait, this isn’t a restaurant.” I pointed to the building.

“Nope,” he said. “I said I can’t cook, and that you were getting a fancy dinner. I didn’t say that it wasn’t a homecooked meal.”

“What are you talking about?”

Sean was grinning madly and typing something into his phone. A few seconds later, the gate opened, and we drove in. As we parked by the front doors, which opened to show two maids awaiting us, I saw the name on the text message conversation.

“Are you serious?” I asked. “Are we really, really at Chef Lawler’s house?”

“We sure are. I met him years ago, and I’ve had dinner here before. He owes me for helping him get a prime spot of retail space in New York for his fusion place.”

“Oh, my God. Am I going to meet him?”

“Of course,” he said. “He’s cooking us dinner right now.”

I was not proud of my behavior over the next half hour. I geeked out like a nerd for the chef. Antonio Lawler was world-renowned, and I owned at least two of his cookbooks and watched his TV show regularly.

It turned out that he was just as funny, just as sweet, and just as talented as he seemed on television. We spent time with him in his kitchen, and in a moment of absolute absurdity, he let me help him work on part of the entrée. The fact that I was going to be able to go home and say that I helped Chef Lawler cook part of a meal that he made specifically for me was something that I was going to brag about forever.

When we finally sat at the table in his massive dining room, Sean was grinning from ear to ear. He clearly enjoyed how much fun I was having and watching me make a fool of myself.

“Okay,” I said, “you win. This is incredible.”

“And to think, I’m not done yet.” He winked. “We still have a pub crawl to do.”

“I just, I can’t believe any of this,” I said. “This is how you live?”

“Not really,” he replied. “I mean, I meet famous people all the time, and I party with them. But I don’t often really get to know anyone. They come in, we party, they leave. They come back six months later and we do it again. But it’s all superficial, you know? Chef Lawler was slightly different. I met him at a dinner and we were seated next to each other for hours. I got to know him as a person over a glass of wine.
